Title: Crash on window size change (v1.10.0)
Post by: Danilo Nishimura on March 17, 2020, 03:15:00 PM
Hi there,

I'm now working from home, and starting from this latest version, I'm having consistent crashes when maximizing the window. This wasn't happening when I used the software on my office computer, and wasn't happening on previous versions (standard, not pro or unlimited versions).

If you guys need anything to help determine the cause of the crash, I'm here to help.

Hi Danilo,

It seems that it crashes when the 3D viewport becomes big. Maybe it could be related to your GPU.
What GPU do you have?

It's a GTX 1080

I uninstalled, rebooted, and installed 1.10.2, and the issue is gone. I don't know exactly what fixed: could be the reboot, could be the uninstall.

So, it worked fine at first, but after using a few other softwares, it happened again. Rebooting the machine often temporarily fixes it.
I'm watching system stats and processes trying to pin down what causes the crash.

The crash may be caused by a shortage of VRAM.

Your log shows 16 GB of display memory: 8 GB of dedicated memory (i.e. DDR5 VRAM) and 8 GB of shared memory (i.e. a part of the main RAM that can be used by the GPU).
But some graphics-related data can only be allocated in dedicated memory and not in shared memory.

If you have a software that uses a lot of display memory, such as Unity or Unreal Engine, if this software uses, let's say, 60% of the display memory but this includes the entire dedicated memory, other applications that use the GPU such as Instant Terra may not be able to run.

Do you have a way to track the amount of used dedicated memory?

So, it's been happpening quite often. After a while using Unity and consuming quite a lot of ram, I close it and open Instant Terra, and it always will crash after resizing the window. It never happens if I restart the machine and open it right away.

I've double checked this time: both ram and vram are free for the app, and still it crashes on resize.
