The Advanced material node does not use rules based on the elevation and slope of the terrain to apply the different layers. Instead, it uses one mask per layer to specify where the layer should be applied.

For each layer, it has one input connector to specify the sub-material to use and one  input connector to specify the mask to use:

To achieve the same behavior as the Simple material node and Material node, you can create masks from the Mask from heights node and the Mask from slopes node, possibly with a Smooth node to create a transition. The major advantage of this node is that you can use any mask:
